Jan Gossaert, called 'Mabuse'

Jan Gossaert (c. 1478-1532), called Mabuse after the Netherlandish town where he was born, was one of the first artists to disseminate the Italian style in the Low Countries, an interest stimulated when he accompanied his patron Philip of Burgundy to Rome in 1508-9. Mabuse's skill in portraiture attracted the patronage of such eminent personages as Emperor Charles V, King Christian II of Denmark, and Margaret of Austria.

Note: we know that this page needs an urgent update. We've got a lengthy article (in French) and a whole book (in Flemish) about Gossaert. We'll do the update as soon as we will have understood these texts.
